What were you looking to gain from your experience?
Insight into laboratory-based jobs and careers in the biomedical field.
What attracted you to the company you interned with?
It is quite a reputable hospital, i was interested to see what it would be like to work for such a prestigious company.
What was a typical working day like?
Mostly job shadowing. as the internship placement was only 8 weeks, the staff there felt it was not worth their time to teach us and allow us to do much.
What did you enjoy about your internship?
Exploring different parts of the hospital and gaining insight into the synergism between doctors, nurses, lab staff etc that allows the hospital to operate smoothly.
What was the most challenging part?
The overall experience was frustrating as I felt like I did not learn much especially considering how much I paid for it, because most of the staff did not want to teach the interns. I would always feel like a burden to them when I try to learn and ask questions, hence most of what I did learn was through my own research.
How did the experience benefit your career?
It made me realised that working in a laboratory is not something I enjoy and I would not pursue it as a long-term career goal.
What is one advice that you would give to others who are planning to do an internship?
Do not choose your company solely based on their name. sometimes smaller companies may be better if you want to have a more meaningful learning experience as they would value your help more than these bigger companies that always have lots of people wanting to intern for them.
