Would you recommend your internship to a friend?

Yes. It was one of the best learning experiences I've had. I think graduating in Biomedical Science, I also felt the need to be in a clinical setting to learn in depth about diseases, diagnosis etc. I learnt so many things of my interest during my internship that wasn't in my degree syllabus during my 3 years. The staffs during my time were also helpful in helping me make the best out of my internship experience.

What were you looking to gain from your experience?

Experience from working in a hospital lab and to be able to work with patient samples.

What attracted you to the company you interned with?

It was a well known brand and I personally had good experience with a previous attachment done after SPM at another branch.

What was a typical working day like?

Busy, lots of learning, both theory & hands-on lab skills.

What did you enjoy about your internship?

So grateful for the people I had the opportunity to work with as I learnt something from them every single day, they tirelessly thought me and showed me how to carry out the responsibilities of a laboratory scientist. They treated me as part of their team and trusted me with daily tasks.

What was the most challenging part?

For me, it was the financial part. Working 5 1/2 days every week with no pay and having to rent a place to stay (the hospital was very far from home) was really challenging.

What is one advice that you would give to others who are planning to do an internship?

Think of it as an experience to learn something new. If you're not sure if the internship you're applying for is something you would wanna do in the long run, your internship period is the best time to try it out. Be proactive and always try to be part of the team, help out your teammates and be willing to learn. That goes a long way. Show genuine interest to learn.
